The bartender: awesome!

The music: I somehow took no note of this but know that they have a killer jukebox

The crowd/atmosphere: Very low-key crowd. The bar was not crowded at 6:30 pm on the Tuesday evening after Memorial Day. Chill, comfortable atmosphere – lots of wood, brick walls, booths & tables and a sizable patio out back, partially shaded by a huge umbrella.

Overall: I haven’t been to Commonwealth for a few years. I always enjoyed it but found their beer list lacking. No longer – they added four more draft lines last weekend and now have a total of 16 draft beers. The owner told me that he is planning on rotating 6 of them. They had a solid craft selection, including the brand new Newburgh Brewing Saison, which I didn’t even know existed. I was also happy to see Brooklyn Radius on the list as well as a few other local selections. They have DUB pies for sale, a free popcorn machine, free wifi and 2 vintage pinball machines, including a 1988 Cyclone which has a serious fan club here. The $4 happy hour is a great one and Commonwealth has been added to my list of favorite Brooklyn bars. Check it out for yourself.

Staying close to home with a bar in my neighborhood in the no-name zone between Park Slope & Sunset Park, Brooklyn:

The Deal:

$2 off drafts, spirits and $5 house wines until 8 pm Monday-Saturday and until midnight on Sunday.

What We Drank & Ate:

Beers, normally $6, were $4 each.  All beers were served in American pint glasses.  Mary’s doesn’t have a food menu, but offers “the best bar snack mix in the world”, according to our bartender.  I would agree – as pictured above, this is a mix of cheese doodles, pretzels, popcorn, cheese tortilla chips.

The bartender: congenial

The music: low volume mix of all kinds of stuff

The crowd/atmosphere: Pretty empty when we rolled in on a Tuesday just after 7 pm.  It was more inhabited but not crowded with a diverse, chill group when we left around 8:30.  Great feeling to the room – tin ceiling, lots of dark wood, wood floor, mismatched chairs, vintage-y lighting with a dart board and a pool table. Retro and homey.

Overall:  The draft list typically contains ten craft beers that don’t rotate often (see the draft board in the pic at the top of this post).  But for $4 a pint, you have a solid list to choose from.  Add in a charming atmosphere and a killer free bar snack mix and you’ve got one sweet craft happy hour.

NYC Happy Hours

Hump Day Happy Hour is a new weekly post highlighting the best craft beer happy hours in NYC.

Hop Devil Grill & Belgian Room

The Deal:

Half off all draft beers from 4 pm to 8 pm Monday through Friday! Food specials are also available throughout the week:

    • Monday: Half price appetizers
    • Tuesday: $1 Taco of the day
    • Thursday: Half price appetizers
    • Sunday: Half price burgers

Happy Hour deals are available in Hop Devil Grill and the adjacent Belgian Room.  Wine and well spirits are also half off from 4-8 pm.

What We Drank & Ate:

Beers, normally $7, were only $3.50 and appetizers were half-price as well.  My faux receipt:

The bartender:  Helpful and friendly

The music: a cool mix of current indie and older R&B

The crowd:  plenty of room at the bar when we rolled in just after 5 on a Monday.  It filled in with a diverse easy-going group of people.  There are several TVs that were playing hockey while we were there for the sports fans.

The beer selection:  solid – the Hop Devil side has 24 taps (all but a few were craft) while the Belgian Room side has 6 taps. Unfortunately, the tap list on Beer Menus and their website weren’t current when we went but I’m sure you’ll find something you like from the list.

The food:  typical but tasty pub fare.  The nachos hit the spot as did the fried mac n cheese bites.

Overall, this is an excellent craft beer happy hour deal – it’s hard to beat a pint of Founders Centennial for $3.50.  Monday, Tuesday & Thursday are the days to go if you want some inexpensive food to go with your brews.  Otherwise, enjoy some $3.50 craft ales from 4-8 pm Monday through Friday at Hop Devil Grill.
