Whole Foods stepping up in Manhattan

I stopped into the new Whole Foods Bowery last night after the tasting to pick up a few bottles of the Schneider-Brooklyner Hopfen Weisse. I was told by a very reliable source that Whole Foods will be opening a craft beer store at this location. Located on the corner of Houston and Chrystie, the store will feature six local taps (with at least one being Sixpoint) for growler fills and an extensive bottle list. Cross your fingers for a late August opening.

I had heard about this while on tour at Sixpoint Craft Brewing back in April as the Whole Foods Corp had approached the brewery on this topic. The motivation behind the idea was to test a return to days without bottles/cans/packaging to be counted as waste/recycling. If all the customers had growlers, it would cut down drastically on issues with returns and thus overhead pertaining to that.

I know the other motivation was also of the green kind: the money spent for kegs to serve growlers is probably a lot cheaper than maintaining storage for cases of beer. The margin of profit is also higher for kegs than bottles, providing for good turnover.
